Handicap Betting Explained - Full Guide
HANDICAP BETTING – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
So, what exactly is handicap betting? How can I make money from it? How does it affect the odds? These are the questions bettors ask frequently. At this end of this article, all these wouldn't be questions for you again. Without further ado, let's get into it, shall we?
WHAT IS HANDICAP BETTING
Handicap betting, also known as Spread Betting in some markets (like the American market), is when you give a team a deficit or head-start to create better and more lucrative odds. Okay, this is what I mean.
At times, the betting odds for some match fixtures can be pretty low. Betting on such matches would amount to very little profit for the punter. Hence, you have the option of getting more odds when you give a team a head start over the other. You can give Team A 2 goals head start before a match, and Team B would have to win by 3 goals for you to win your stake.
Usually, this kind of betting is done when a very strong team and a weak team want to play. Let’s say there’s a La Liga match between Real Madrid and Granada CF. It’s almost impossible for a bettor not to see Real Madrid as the winning team in this match fixture. I mean, if Real Madrid is in its top form, then they should win this match.
With this, you cannot expect the bookmaker to place high odds on Real Madrid winning. Obviously, the odds would be very low, and your profits will be low even if you win the bet. So, the bookmaker gives you the choice of putting Real Madrid at a handicap.
So, you can give Granada CF +2 goals before the match. Now, Real Madrid has to win by 3 or more goals for you to win your stake. Yes, in a standard handicap, a draw doesn’t count as a win. So, if you are really confident that Real Madrid would win by 2 goals or more, then you can go for the handicap betting. Again with this, you get more odds of increasing your profits.
Because football is such a game where not too many goals are scored, the handicaps usually range from one to four goals. So, you should take note of that.
Handicaps betting has its different variations. Each one has its peculiarities. We have the Level Asian Handicaps, Half Handicaps as well as the Split Handicaps. We start off by talking about the most popular type, which the Level Asian Handicaps.
LEVEL ASIAN HANDICAPS
This term is used quite loosely in the betting community, but I will break it down clearly for you. So, usually in Level Asian handicap betting, you win back your stake when the handicap ends as a draw. In the standard handicaps, you lose your stake when your prediction fails, and even when the game ends in a draw. Well, that is not the case here. For example, we have two teams. Let’s say Chelsea and Arsenal.
If you give Chelsea -1 handicap, that would mean Chelsea has to win by 2 goals for you to win your bet. That is, you win the profit from that correct prediction. However, if Chelsea scores just one goal in the match and Arsenal scored none, because of the handicap, it is technically a draw.
Chelsea; Handicap = -1; Goal scored = 1. Arsenal; Goal scored = 0
After handicap calculations, Match score = 0 - 0
So, because the goals didn’t outweigh the handicap, the match is said to have been a draw. If this happens, you lose your betting profit, but your stake is returned to you. So, if you place the bet with $5, the $5 is returned to you with no profits.
Some bookmakers call it the Level Asian Handicap or just Asian Handicap.
Sometimes, you would see the handicap as decimal numbers like 0.5, 2.5, -0.5, etc. This might make you wonder if there are half goals in football. But just as you thought, there are no half goals.
The half goals are mainly to eliminate draws. Still on our Chelsea and Arsenal example. If you bet on Chelsea with a handicap of -2.5, they need to win by 3 goals for you to win your bet.
Chelsea; Handicap = -2.5; Goal scored = 3
3 – 2.5 = 0.5
Arsenal; Goal scored = 0
So, Match Goal after the handicap is
Chelsea – Arsenal is 0.5 – 0
So, that how the Half bet is. You can only win or lose since the other team cannot score a half goal. There's no draw.
Now, maybe you have seen the handicaps look like this before:
Team A (+2, +2.5)
Team B (-2, -2.5)
This might appear complicated but trust me, it’s not. Basically, what this means is that your stake will be shared among each of the handicaps. That is, if you place your bet on Team B with $6, your stake will be divided into 2. One for the -2, the other for the -2.5.
So, you can either win one or both of the handicaps. If Team B wins by 3 goals, the full stake is won, but if they win by 2, you only win half of the stake (the -2 handicap).
3 goals – 2 = 1(won); 3 goals – 2.5 = 0.5(won)------ Full stack won
2goals – 2 = 0 (returned); 2goals – 2.5 = -0.5(lost)------- Half of the stack is returned.
So, how can all these be useful for you? Well, as always, betting opportunities usually arise from time to time. However, not everybody has the professional eyes to spot these golden opportunities.
